Yes, you read this title right. If you haven’t yet heard about Rosehip Oil, it is quickly becoming the latest skincare craze, and for good reason. Well-known names like Miranda Kerr, Gweneth Paltrow and Kate Middleton are praising the results of rosehip oil. Even well-known bloggers like Wellness Mama have said in blog posts that they find rosehip oil to be better than Botox and obviously much healthier for you. I ordered this bottle of rosehip oil about 5 months ago, but didn’t actually open it and try it until recently. I now wish I had tried it sooner, because it definitely lives up to the hype. There are some really great benefits of rosehip oil, especially to areas like the skin, that we get to take advantage of.
What is Rosehip Oil?
Rosehip Oil comes from the seeds of rose hips. Rose hips are the fruit left behind after a rose has flowered and dropped its petals and rose hips (1). Rosehip oil is harvested from the seeds of rose bushes mostly grown in Chile. The oil is full of vitamins, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids. It is also one of the richest plant sources of vitamin C making it a great choice for the skin.
Benefits of Rosehip Oil
There are numerous benefits of Rosehip Oil that go beyond just the skin. However, for this post, I am focusing solely on the benefits to the skin, because let’s face it, this is a big attention grabber for all of us!
-
Reduces Acne Scarring and Stretch Marks
The fatty acids in rosehip oil promotes skin regeneration. When applied directly to the skin, the essential fatty acids act as emollients, which increase hydration in the skin.
Note: Although rosehip oil helps with acne scarring, it is not recommended to apply the oil directly on acne.
-
Nourishes Dry Skin
Because rosehip oil is rich in fatty acids such as omega-6 and omega-3, it acts as a great and effective natural moisturizer. Say goodbye to your expensive, chemical crazed moisturizer, and simply apply 2-3 drops of rosehip oil to your skin every night. It is also a great remedy for dry elbows, heals, and lips.
-
Treats Wrinkles
Many best-selling skincare products contain oleic and linoleic acid. Rosehip oil naturally contains these essential fatty acids. These ingredients are valued for their moisturizing and anti-aging properties. Fatty acids boost skin hydration and restore elasticity.
-
Fades Skin Scars
In 2015, the Journal of Cosmetics released a study, showing that rosehip oil can aid in the healing process after a surgical procedure. In addition, rosehip oil can actually help reduce scaring from surgical procedures (2).
-
Penetrates the Skin
Rosehip oil is considered a “dry oil,” which means it sinks into the skin quickly. This allows the oils essential fatty acids to penetrate and soothe dry skin quickly. This also makes it convenient to apply in the morning before you put on your makeup.
-
Boosts Collagen Production
Because of the naturally occurring vitamin A, rosehip oil actually encourages the skin to form its own collagen.
-
Reduces Age Spots
The antioxidants found in rosehip oil, especially the combination of vitamin C and vitamin E, can help to combat free radicals that cause sun damage. These antioxidants can actually reduce the overproduction of pigment in the skin, which is exactly what leads to uneven tones and age spots (3).
How to Apply Rosehip Oil
For best results, it is recommend to apply only a few drops to your skin in the morning and evening. Because it absorbs into the skin so quickly, you will not be left feeling oily.
Choosing the Best Rosehip Oil
It is best to choose a cold-pressed rosehip oil because it hasn’t been altered by heat, and therefore retains more nutrients. Conventionally grown rosehip seed oil is usually pale yellow and lacking the beneficial ingredients like lycopene, minerals, and vitamins A & C. Organic rosehip seed oil like this one, tend to have a more vibrant orange-yellow color due to its higher level of carotenoids and Vitamin A (4).
If I Haven’t Convinced You Just Yet…
My hormones have been so out of whack since becoming pregnant. My skin has been dull, dry, and acne prone. These issues are what finally convinced me to open up the rosehip oil I bought and give it a try. I was shocked by how moisturized my skin looked and felt just the morning after I applied it. I was nervous to try it in the morning before applying my makeup, thinking I would look like an oily mess. But again, because rosehip oil absorbs so quickly, you don’t look and feel oily. I have just recently started using it in the morning before applying my makeup and I am loving it.
If you follow Emily Maynard on Instagram, you may have noticed in her stories, she has been raving about rosehip oil as well. She has actually said it has trumped all of the very expensive moisturizers she has been using for such a long time.
Although I still love coconut oil for certain things (I apply coconut oil directly on my acne areas), rosehip oil has been a game changer for my skincare routine. It is inexpensive compared to so many well-known products on the market today, and it is all-natural, safe, and pure for your skin!
Below are a few brands I recommend:
