I have never really been a fan of New Year’s resolutions. Studies show that 60% of New Year’s resolutions fail. Why? Some are unrealistic, others are not entirely thought out, and often times a resolution is just something you’re suppose “to do” at the start of a new year. The problem with all of these scenarios is that each one leaves you frustrated and disappointed with yourself. So today, I want you to think past cliché New Year’s resolutions and focus on how you can make positive healthy lifestyle changes that will last!
1. Make Your Goals Realistic
Often times we set ourselves up for failure from the start because we set goals that just aren’t realistic or fit with our lifestyle. For example, if you want to get in shape this year, that is awesome, you can do it! But, make sure you follow a workout plan that works for you. If you work full time, need to get dinner on the table at 6pm and spend time with the family – going to a physical gym may not be the best fit for you. Instead, perhaps look for something you can do at home, either in the morning before getting ready for work or at night. There are so many online programs available that provide a great workout, without needing full equipment or a physical gym. This option allows you to workout on your own time, literally in your living room, which can be so much more convenient and doable for some. Don’t set goals that simply are not realistic for your lifestyle.
2. Accomplish One Thing At A Time
Don’t overwhelm yourself with big goals, dreams, and ideas. Instead, start with one goal or plan, conquer it, check it off the list and move to the next single goal or plan. When I started this blog, I had 10 different projects that I wanted to work on and I soon became overwhelmed because I jumped from one thing to the next and ended up accomplishing nothing. I quickly learned that I needed to focus on one single thing, do it well, and complete it. Once completed, I could THEN move onto the next project or goal. This isn’t always easy, and I still have to put myself in check quite often. But, by accomplishing one single thing at a time, in the end, you will actually complete everything, without being really overwhelmed and unproductive!
3. Make Time For You
We live in a society where we have 50 things going on every day, and it is hard to fit “you” into the day. I get it, life is so busy and sometimes we don’t think we are a priority. If you read the “About Me” section of my blog, I talk about my journey that got me back to the gym. Going from corporate world to mom world was a huge change for me. I needed an outlet, something that was “me” time. This is when I joined the gym, put my kids in childcare for one hour, 3 days a week and it changed my life in so many ways. It is crucially important, as you are planning your goals, dreams, and aspirations for this coming year, to fit time for you in there. Do something that re-energizes you, makes you feel sane, and gives you a sense of purpose. And know you are not being selfish for doing this!
4. Have A Passion For What You’re Pursuing
In May, 2017, my husband and I did our first Whole30. This experience changed my thinking and eating habits in so many ways. I have always considered myself a healthy eater, but going through this experience, took it to a new level. I learned things about my body and educated myself in a lot of different areas. This process created a passion in me to continue to pursue clean, healthy eating on a daily basis for me and my family. It is much easier to pursue something and work hard at it, when you are passionate about it.

We are doing 100% AIF in February, it’s like whole30 but MUCH more restrictive :(, no nightshades, no lentils of any kind- green beans, etc., no grain of any kind- quinoa, etc., no seeds (like nuts), and more… I’d love to start in January, but we’ll be traveling some and there is no way we can be that restrictive. Good luck! I hope we can get through it, we have 1 month to be extremely restrictive (food can’t even touch any surface that had gluten on it, etc.), and then we can loosen up slightly. I hope it helps.
